Community Foundation Awards $25,000 Grant to 103.7 The Beat for Youth Media and Community Expansion
Muskegon, MI — October 19, 2025 — The Community Foundation for Muskegon County has awarded a $25,000 grant to WUVS-LP 103.7 The Beat to support the station’s ongoing Community Expansion and Youth Media Initiative.
This vital funding comes at a critical time for the community radio station, which lost over 50% of its annual funding in July when Congress voted to defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). As one of Michigan’s few African American–owned public radio stations, 103.7 The Beat was among the hardest-hit broadcasters in the state—forcing the station to seek new partnerships and community support to continue its mission.
Despite these challenges, 103.7 The Beat remains one of the most listened-to stations in the Muskegon area, proudly serving as a trusted community voice for more than 23 and a half years.
Founded in 1961, the Community Foundation for Muskegon County has been dedicated to improving the quality of life for all residents. As a publicly supported community endowment, the Foundation receives and manages contributions from thousands of local citizens and organizations who share a common commitment to the future of Muskegon County.
“This grant represents more than financial support—it’s a vote of confidence in our mission to uplift and inform the community,” said Paul Allen Billings, President and General Manager of 103.7 The Beat. “With this investment, we’ll continue expanding opportunities for local youth to gain real-world media experience and strengthen our community programming.”
The Youth Media Initiative empowers young people through hands-on training in radio broadcasting, journalism, and digital storytelling—creating pathways for the next generation of media professionals. The Community Expansion Project will further enhance the station’s outreach, partnerships, and impact across Muskegon County.
For more than two decades, 103.7 The Beat has been a cornerstone of community media—amplifying local voices, fostering civic dialogue, and inspiring positive change. With the continued support of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County and the residents it serves, the station is poised to build an even brighter future for the community.
