UPDATE: State Police Investigation of Muskegon Heights Public Schools Found No Prosecutable Violations

UPDATE 8:48 AM 2/5/2012: Muskegon Area Intermediate School District Superintendent and Interim Muskegon Heights Superintendent Dave Sipka provided this statement last last week:

“The State Police have completed their review of the use of federal funds by former Muskegon Heights Public Schools staff.  They will not be filing charges.  Further review by the US Department of Education is to be expected because federal grant dollars were involved.”

 

UPDATE 3:45 PM 2/3/2012: Speaking with Michigan State Police’s Office of Public Affairs, 103.7 The Beat has learned that the state police ended their investigation because they found “no criminal wrongdoings or violations that could be prosecuted” regarding the alleged misuse of Title I federal funds by Muskegon Heights Public Schools.

103.7 spoke with Shannon Banner, Public Affairs Sector of the Michigan State Police.

Banner indicated that their investigation ends with criminal violations; civil or administrative policy violations are beyond the jurisdiction of the Michigan State Police and would fall to the state or federal Departments of Education.

Communications to the Michigan Department of Education’s Deputy Superintendent and the U.S. Department of Education’s Inspector General’s office have not been returned at this time regarding any continued investigation.
