This is not to be confused with the deficit that Muskegon Heights Public Schools continues to carry from before it outsourced educational and other services to Mosaica Education in 2012.
Muskegon Public Schools Superintendent Jon Felske provided an update on the district’s deficit elimination plan at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting.
Muskegon Public Schools superintendent Jon Felske believes the district needs to cut approximately $7.2 million from its budget next year to be out of its deficit within the two years mandated by the state.
Felske indicated he would be contacting the Michigan Department of Education in the next week to formally notify them of the district’s financial situation.
Despite widespread misinformation, the board of education retains decision-making powers for the district. While the school board asked the state last month to install Demetriou as an emergency financial manager for the district, the state has not taken action on the matter; Demetriou remains in an advisory role only.
Comments from Education Achievement System chancellor John Covington come as the board, district superintendent Dr. Dana Bryant, the district’s auditors and representatives of other arms of the district will head to Lansing Wednesday to submit their deficit elimination plan for the coming school year.
With budget figures from Lansing still up in the air, Muskegon Heights school board president Avery Burrel noted their district will try to work with other districts to weather cuts that may hit the whole county.
