Led by Pastor Samuel Greer, the Social Justice Commission is looking for local government cooperation as it looks to focus all community efforts to improve Muskegon County.
Councilman and Muskegon Heights Athletic Director Keith Guy pointed out that the fields could be used as home turf for MHSAA varsity or other county league sports, bringing people into Muskegon Heights
“I started thinking about some of the great festivals we have here: Summer Celebration, Taste of Muskegon… It came over me and I wondered why these festivals weren’t connected with maritime history,” said Hudsonville’s Roger Zuidema
While partial funding is now secured for the Festival in the Park, the discussions leading to the decision were wide-ranging and identified a need for better rules for approving these kinds of requests.
The first big initiative for the fledgling youth advisory group: June 9th’s End Of School Bash, starting in the afternoon for all students in the county on what is the last day of school for most.
In exchange for being able to schedule games on the field in the months of April and May, the Lakeshore Baseball Club will maintain the field in those months, including bringing it up to regulation standards. This agreement could save the city maintenance dollars.
The City Commission cited unpaid bills and overextended staff as reasons to deny requests for Labor Day weekend events in 2011. Without license approval, the newly-reborn Shoreline Spectacular may not fare well financially again this year.
