Contest Title: Black History Month Essay Contest

Sponsor: WUVS 103.7 The Beat

Prize: A free trip to Africa for the top 3 winners. Also $500 to 1st Place, $300 to 2nd Place & $100 to 3rd Place

Eligibility: Open to 9th-12th grade students at Muskegon Heights Academy.

Essay Requirements:

  • Format: MLA format (12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced).
  • Length: 2-4 pages.
  • Title: Centered on the first page.
  • Structure:
    • Introduction paragraph
    • Three body paragraphs (each with 4-8 sentences)
    • Conclusion paragraph
  • Thesis Statement: A clear and concise statement of the essay’s main argument, presented early in the essay. An example is provided: “The influence of African American civil rights leaders, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, has shaped modern social justice movements, inspiring young people to fight for equality today.” This statement is used to illustrate a clear argument about specific leaders and their influence on current movements.
  • Essay Topic Options (choose one):
    • Historical Black Icons: Write about a significant historical figure in Black history (examples: Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, Maya Angelou) and their impact on the world.
    • Black History in Your Family: Share the story of a Black icon in your family or community, explaining their influence on your life and the lives of others.
    • Black History Today: Discuss the influence of Black history on your life, community, identity, or future.
