Water damage at the Nelson Place Apartments

On Sunday, December 24, 2023, at approx. 423am, the Muskegon Fire Department was
dispatched to a Fire Sprinkler Activation alarm at the Nelson Place Apartments, a senior
living complex, located at 350 Houston Ave in the City of Muskegon. Units arrived on the
scene to find a 6-inch fire suppression supply pipe on the top floor of the 4-story complex,
had ruptured. The fire suppression system is equipped with a diesel-powered water pump,
which assists the flow of water to approx. 1500 GPM, causing water damage to 53
apartments of the 101-apartment complex.


Of the 53 damaged apartments, 24 were determined to be too dangerous for occupancy.
The Muskegon Fire Department received assistance from, the North Muskegon, Muskegon
Township, and Norton Shores Fire Departments. The Red Cross is on the scene to assist the
displaced residents. It may be several weeks before residents are able to return to their
apartments.
One resident was transported to the hospital with health issues unrelated to the event. No
other injuries were reported.
