Trinity Health Muskegon Hosts Muskegon Area Career Tech Center Students for “A Day in the Life of An Injured Student”
MUSKEGON, Mich. (March 19, 2025) – Trinity Health Muskegon and the Muskegon Area Career Tech Center (CTC) hosted a joint event Tuesday for 77 CTC students to give them an immersive look at different health care-related careers and educate them on the opportunities available in their own community.
Tuesday, March 18th, educators and students from Muskegon Area Schools visited the Muskegon hospital (1500 E. Sherman Blvd) and joined Trinity Health Muskegon colleagues for an activity, “A Day in the Life of an Injured Student”. The activity followed the medical journey of a student injured while playing football. From the field scene with paramedics to the operating room with surgery techs, students learned about each medical professional the injured athlete encounters.
In collaboration with the CTC, students discovered nearly 50 medical and health careers. Trinity Health Muskegon colleagues shared descriptions of their professions, necessary education, career insights, and other helpful tips during the event. Health care college representatives and Trinity Health Muskegon Talent Acquisition were also in attendance as student resources.
“Many of these students did not know how many different careers are available in a hospital. This includes athletic trainers, paramedics, doctors, nurses, radiology technicians, lab technicians, emergency department personnel, operating room personnel, computer support staff, dietary staff, hospital facilities personnel, and so many more.” said Jerry Evans, MD, immediate past chief of staff at Trinity Health Muskegon. “We want these students to understand the many careers available to them and that we want them to stay here and work for us. Trinity Health Muskegon is committed to making a difference in our community and encouraging our kids to consider a career in healthcare.
The event is part of Trinity Health’s Growing Our Own initiative, a program aimed at reaching Muskegon students between third and twelfth grades to see a career in health care as an achievable goal, along with the importance of strong study habits. As 18% of nurses and other health care professionals pivoted careers due to the pandemic, it is imperative to give young minds the resources and information to feel passionate about expanding their education and pursuing in-demand careers.
Tuesday’s event was one of two opportunities for CTC students and educators to attend, with the second day scheduled for March 27.
The Growing Our Own initiative will continue outreach to Muskegon County students through additional education, participation in career fairs, and more. This program is made possible by partnering with CTC, Muskegon Area Intermediate School District (MAISD), Boys and Girls Club of the Muskegon Lakeshore, and Michigan Works.
