Marquette, Nelson Neighborhood Associations Help Pay For Extra Police Bike Equipment

If you see Muskegon police officers out on the streets on new bikes lately, you can thank the Marquette and Nelson Neighborhood Associations in part for it.

Muskegon’s Police force was able to use money from their Criminal Forfeiture Account to purchase 12 new heavy-duty Trek bicycles earlier this year.

The Nelson Neighborhood Improvement Association and the Marquette Neighborhood associated donated money for the 12 hard-sided storage cases now installed on the back rack of each bike.

These new cases paid for by the two associations are larger and more protective than soft-sided cases that officers used to have.  They can even fit a full-size helmet.

The bikes are for heavy-duty riding on Muskegon’s streets and at festivals, and include hard-side protected cases to store helmets and other equipment.

The Department of Public Safety’s previous bicycles were nearly 2 decades old, and were of the same brand in a similar model.

The Muskegon City Commission and Public Safety Direction Chief Anthony Kliebecker formally recognized both neighborhoods at Tuesday’s regular full council meeting, with representatives from both present.

Look out for the bikes and their extra equipment around town in the next few weeks, months, years, or even decades.
