The Muskegon Police Department has a subject in custody for an armed robbery/shooting that occurred around 12:45am this morning. The incident happened in a parking lot used by patrons of St. Michaels Catholic Church and Prayer Chapel. The lot is at the southwest corner of Sixth St. and Dale Ave. in the City of Muskegon.
The victim was a retired Muskegon County Judge. The victim had just parked and exited his vehicle so he could attend a prayer vigil in the chapel. The victim was approached in the parking lot by the suspect who pointed a handgun at him and demanded his wallet. When the victim refused to give the suspect his wallet, the suspect fired shots at the victim but did not strike him.
An off-duty Muskegon Police Officer was in St. Michaels Prayer Chapel and heard the shots. The officer found the victim at the secured entrance to the chapel and helped the victim get inside then called Central Dispatch. At this same time, witnesses to the incident from a nearby home were calling Central Dispatch with information and a description of the suspect.
Responding officers located the suspect about one block away and took him into custody. The gun believed used in the crime was also recovered by officers at this time. The victim identified the suspect the officers had in custody as the one who tried to rob him and shot at him.
The suspect a 27 year old man who lists addresses in Muskegon and Muskegon Height’s was lodged in the Muskegon County Jail on charges of Armed Robbery and Felony Assault.
