MUSKEGON, Mich. (November 4, 2026) — It’s a proud moment for Muskegon as one of the community’s own celebrates another major statewide election victory.
Brianna Scott, a Muskegon resident and current chair of the Michigan State University Board of Trustees, has won reelection to another eight-year term, finishing first among the candidates in Tuesday’s statewide election.
Scott, who was first elected in 2018, secured her second term alongside fellow Democratic incumbent Kelly Tebay Zemke. Both women will continue serving on the governing board of one of Michigan’s largest universities.
With approximately 93% of the statewide vote counted as of 7:03 a.m. Wednesday, Scott led the field with 2,307,390 votes, representing 26.7% of the total. Tebay Zemke followed with 2,210,309 votes, or 25.5%.
The results remain unofficial pending certification.
For Muskegon, Scott’s victory represents more than another election win. It is a reminder that leaders from the lakeshore community can make an impact at the highest levels of education and public service in Michigan.
Since joining the MSU Board of Trustees in January 2019, Scott has helped guide decisions affecting thousands of students, faculty members and families across the state.
Her role as board chair has placed her in a prominent leadership position at Michigan State University, helping oversee institutional governance, financial priorities and the university’s long-term direction.
Scott’s reelection means Muskegon will continue to have a voice at the table as Michigan State University makes important decisions about its future.
Throughout her service, Scott has emphasized the importance of making higher education accessible and affordable while supporting a safe and welcoming campus environment.
Her priorities have included college affordability, student housing, campus safety and responsible university leadership.

Scott’s statewide victory is another accomplishment worth celebrating in Muskegon, a community that continues to produce leaders making contributions well beyond West Michigan.
Finishing first in a statewide election involving millions of votes is a significant achievement and reflects the broad support Scott received from voters across Michigan.
Her reelection also highlights the importance of representation and leadership from communities like Muskegon in statewide institutions.
