City of Muskegon Removes Winter Street Parking Restrictions

Residents of the City of Muskegon have one less winter worry – getting their cars off the street overnight.

Before Muskegon’s city commission on Tuesday, Chapter 92, Article II, Section 8.31 of the city’s code of ordinances previously did not allow for street parking between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. from November 15 through April 15. The ordinance previously existed to allow for street plowing.

A unanimous 6-0 vote removed this prohibition, allowing for street parking at night year round. Commissioner Eric Hood was not present for the vote at Tuesday’s meeting.

Many provisions remain in Section II of Chapter 92 regarding parking, including some that are not commonly known.  Parking in front of a theater is specifically documented within the code of ordinance (8.10(o)). Parking on terraces or parkways remains specifically prohibited; this rule was previously relaxed in special circumstances, including these specific winter months.

Residents must park far enough away from fire stations, fire apparatuses or burning fires themselves – in some cases up to 500 feet.  Parking within 200 feet of an accident is also prohibited.  “Too close to a railroad” is also in the code’s language, though it does not specify how close is too close.
