Getty Street Reconstruction From Sherman to Broadway Coming In 2013

The stretch of Getty Street in Muskegon Heights from Sherman Boulevard to Broadway Avenue will be resurfaced in 2013.

Mayor Darrell Paige announced at Monday’s city council meeting that the city received a grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) that day for $371,200 to rebuild that section of one of the busiest – and bumpiest – streets in the county.

MDOT’s grants are year-specific, meaning that the funds can be used no sooner or later than 2013.  Paige indicated other roadwork would be taking place around the city in 2012.

No word was immediately available at Monday’s meeting as to when during 2013 the construction would take place.

Due to significant budget belt-tightening, many towns in Muskegon County including the City of Muskegon Heights has had to cut back its budgets relating to infrastructure in recent years.  Reported potholes are often fixed on a per-case basis, but significant road rebuilds in many towns have been delayed in recent years.

It is typical for cities to contribute a matching portion to what MDOT puts forward – anywhere from 20-50% of the total cost of a project.  MDOT is expected to pick up about 80% of the tab for the Getty Street job.
