With a $5.7 million deficit projected for next school year, Superintendent Jon Felske’s bone to pick with Lansing has intensified, and board members, parents and staff present the meeting also echoed his sentiments.
“This has never happened in the history of public education in the State of Michigan," said Superintendent Jon Felske
While the district’s technology department and other parties will review it before being put into action, the initial draft provides a look into how the district views social media use by its employees and may seek to regulate it. The main idea of the draft: the teacher-student relationship that schools depend on can be greatly altered because social media treats those connected as peers.
With Tuesday’s vote, the gym and basketball components of the program will return starting in October and will run from this month through March 2012. The City of Muskegon will put up $18,500 to fund the program from its Leisure Services budget, which is in line with last year’s costs.
According to Superintendent Jon Felske, the district originally anticipated 4671 students for this school year. This makes the unofficial headcount of 4763 students done on 9/19 only about 55% of the total loss that was expected.
With the decision to keep the building's principal, Muskegon Community Education will lose 3 of its 8 teachers with the 2011-2012 budget cuts but will keep both of its administrators.
Over 125 people were present at Tuesday night’s meeting as the school board passed a budget with deep cuts across the board. When questions of possible enrollment drops were raised by the public, board treasurer Billie Bruce urged those who organized the large attendance to go door-to-door to keep students in Muskegon: "I'll go with you."
Muskegon's school board voted to not just pink-slip some segments of its employee base, but to send out non-renewal notices to all who are employed by the district. While no one is necessarily out of a job yet, no one knows for sure they will be employed after July 1 either.
