Trump’s comments on recession and stock market drop trigger economic worry for Black communities

After President Donald Trump refused to rule out a recession and the U.S. stock market saw its steepest decline this year to date, there are growing concerns about the health of the economy and the disproportionate impact an economic downturn would have on Black households. Despite promising to usher America into its “golden age” and that there would be an economic “boom like no other,” Trump appeared to temper expectations as rising costs continue to give American consumers whiplash, and […]

Trump’s HUD Secretary cuts a key fair housing rule; advocates warn of deeper segregation

Scott Turner, secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, has announced he is terminating the Affirmative Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) rule in an effort to cut “costly red tape.” AFFH, which was originally introduced by the Obama administration, required any state receiving federal funding to demonstrate they were taking steps to truly implement fair housing and eliminate discrimination, by answering a series of questions and assembling planning reports that showed concrete action.   The rule was rescinded once […]

California lawmakers introduce reparations bills amid Trump’s anti-DEI backlash

Members of California’s Legislative Black Caucus introduced a package of reparations bills, signaling a renewed commitment to racial justice even as President Donald Trump has taken actions to curtail diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, and amid a subsequent DEI backlash in corporate America. “With the constant attacks on civil rights and the rolling back of decades of progress, it is essential that we continue the fight for justice,” said the State Senator Akilah Weber Pierson, chair of the California State […]

Mayor Bibb says irony of Trump’s anti-DEI crusade is that racial equity was mandated by Republican president

Democratic Black mayors are on the frontlines of the opposition to President Donald Trump‘s crusade against diversity, equity and inclusion, among other dizzying actions coming from the White House. Judge largely blocks Trump’s executive orders ending federal support for DEI programs

A federal judge on Friday largely blocked sweeping executive orders from President Donald Trump that seek to end government support for programs promoting diversity, equity and inclusion. U.S. District Judge Adam Abelson in Baltimore granted a preliminary injunction blocking the administration from terminating or changing federal contracts they consider equity-related. Abelson found that the orders likely carry constitutional violations, including against free-speech rights. Trump signed an order his first day in office directing federal agencies to terminate all “equity-related” grants or contracts. He signed […]

Trump’s Education secretary pick declines to say if Black history courses violate anti-DEI order

Linda McMahon, President Donald Trump‘s nominee for secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, vaguely responded to questions from U.S. senators about whether Black history courses in public schools would violate Trump’s anti-DEI order in education. And while she expressed support for continued funding for HBCUs, McMahon signaled that some schools could lose federal funding for so-called DEI programs. During her confirmation hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee on Thursday, McMahon was asked directly by Senator […]

The latest inflation report shows that high prices are Trump’s major economic challenge

As a candidate last year, Donald Trump suggested he could easily conquer inflation and ease voters’ fears about the economy. “I will very quickly deflate,” he promised at a California rally. “We are going to take inflation, and we are going to deflate it. We are going to deflate inflation. We are going to defeat inflation. We’re going to knock the hell out of inflation.” Wednesday’s consumer price index report showed that inflation is punching back — and President Trump could end up […]

Trump’s commerce secretary pick publicly affirmed DEI at US companies before nomination

Before being nominated by President Donald Trump to be secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Howard Lutnick affirmed the need for companies to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion — a stark contrast to the policy position of his future boss and his administration. During an interview with CNBC in December 2020, Lutnick, then chairman and CEO of the financial services institutions Cantor Fitzgerald and BGC Group, affirmed DEI’s corporate benefits. “Well, look, I have two public companies … both of […]

Trump’s Justice Department orders prosecutors to drop charges against New York Mayor Eric Adams

A top official at the U.S. Department of Justice has ordered federal prosecutors to drop charges against New York Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat who has cultivated a warm relationship with President Donald Trump. In a two-page memo obtained by The Associated Press, acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, an alumnus of the Manhattan office that brought the case, said that the decision to dismiss the charges was reached without an assessment of the strength of the prosecution of the […]
