‘Breaking the law’: Governor Wes Moore slams Trump’s ‘temper trantrums’ over SNAP legal fight

Despite the historic 43-day government shutdown seemingly nearing an end, President Donald Trump continues to push back against a court order to fully fund SNAP for November, ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. The Trump administration took things further when the U.S. Department of Agriculture demanded that states “undo” attempts to fully disperse SNAP food assistance to enrollees amid the ongoing legal fight — or face fiscal retaliation. Governor Wes Moore, whose state of Maryland is among the 25 states challenging […]

DHS said that conditions in Haiti have improved and Haitians no longer meet the conditions for the temporary legal protections. The termination of temporary protected status, or TPS, applies to about 500,000 Haitians who are already in the United States, some of whom have lived here for more than a decade. As legal fight over Guard deployment plays out, Noem vows to continue Trump’s immigration crackdown

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem pledged to carry on with the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown despite waves of unrest across the U.S. Hours after her comment Thursday, a judge directed the president to return control to California over National Guard troops he deployed after protests erupted over the immigration crackdown, but an appeals court quickly put the brakes on that and temporarily blocked the order that was to go into effect on Friday. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals scheduled a […]

Trump says he’d be ‘stupid’ not to accept ‘free, very expensive airplane’ from Qatar despite legal challenges

President Donald Trump‘s readiness to accept a luxury jet as a gift from the ruling family of Qatar for conversion into a presidential aircraft has revived the conversations around emoluments and the notion of a president otherwise allegedly profiting off of the office. “I would never be one to turn down that kind of an offer,” he told reporters on Monday, after being asked if Qatar was getting anything in return for the plane. “I could be a stupid person and say, ‘no, we don’t […]

A legal battle is brewing as Trump accused of ignoring court’s block on anti-DEI policies

Despite a federal judge blocking President Donald Trump’s anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion executive orders, his administration is being accused of ignoring the court ruling by still requiring government contractors and nonprofits receiving federal grants to comply with the orders. The nonprofit Democracy Forward, which is representing plaintiffs in a federal lawsuit against Trump’s anti-DEI orders, has filed an emergency motion for a status conference with the court. It cites a recent report from Rolling Stone that claims administration officials have internally and […]

Lowe’s changes some DEI policies amid legal attacks on diversity programs and activist pressure

NEW YORK (AP) — Home improvement chain Lowe’s is scaling back its diversity, equity and inclusion policies, joining the ranks of several other companies that altered their programs since the U.S. Supreme Court outlawed affirmative action in college admissions or after facing a conservative backlash online. In an internal memo shared by Lowe’s with The Associated Press, its executive leadership said the retailer began “reviewing” its programs following the court’s July 2023 ruling and the company recently decided to combine […]

Chicago ‘mansion’ tax to fund homeless services faces legal limbo

CHICAGO (AP) — An unusual legal challenge may upend the future of a Chicago ballot measure that would hike a real estate tax on high-end property sales to fund services for homeless people. Such citywide ballot measures are rare in the nation’s third-largest city, but other cities, including Los Angeles, have approved similar so-called “mansion taxes.” A Cook County judge last month rejected the measure, but backers of the effort, called Bring Chicago Home, hope it will be overturned. Supporters of a […]

Trump legal battle escalates as Willis decries ‘race card’ amid claims of ‘improper’ relationship

Though Donald Trump emerged victorious in the Iowa presidential caucus, winning an overwhelming majority of Republican primary voters, the former twice-impeached president still faces many legal battles, including four criminal indictments. While Trump is celebrating his victory in the Hawkeye State, political experts note that it came amid a considerably low turnout.  “This suggests that Trump and Republicans have some real fractures within their party that have still not yet been mended,” said Joel Payne, a Democratic strategist, told theGrio.
