Florida congressional districts that eliminated a majority-Black seat upheld by state Supreme Court

Florida’s Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the state’s current congressional redistricting map, rejecting a challenge over the elimination of a majority-Black district in north Florida that was pushed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. The court, dominated by DeSantis appointees, said in its ruling that restoration of the district that previously united Black communities from Jacksonville to west of Tallahassee, or across 200 miles (322 kilometers), would amount to impermissible racial gerrymandering. That, the majority ruled, violates the Constitution’s equal protection guarantees. […]

Supreme Court allows Trump to lay off nearly 1,400 Education Department employees

The Supreme Court is allowing President Donald Trump to put his plan to dismantle the Education Department back on track and go through with laying off nearly 1,400 employees. With the three liberal justices in dissent, the court on Monday paused an order from U.S. District Judge Myong Joun in Boston, who issued a preliminary injunction reversing the layoffs and calling into question the broader plan. The layoffs “will likely cripple the department,” Joun wrote. A federal appeals court refused to put […]

Supreme Court clears way for deportation to South Sudan of several immigrants with no ties there

The Supreme Court on Thursday cleared the way for the deportation of several immigrants who were put on a flight in May bound for South Sudan, a war-ravaged country where they have no ties. The decision comes after the court’s conservative majority found that immigration officials can quickly deport people to third countries. The majority halted an order that had allowed immigrants to challenge any removals to countries outside their homeland where they could be in danger. The court’s latest decision makes […]

Supreme Court makes it easier to claim ‘reverse discrimination’ in employment

A unanimous Supreme Court made it easier Thursday to bring lawsuits over so-called reverse discrimination, siding with an Ohio woman who claims she didn’t get a job and then was demoted because she is straight. The justices’ decision affects lawsuits in 20 states and the District of Columbia where, until now, courts had set a higher bar when members of a majority group, including those who are white and heterosexual, sue for discrimination under federal law. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson wrote for the court […]

What to know about the upcoming Supreme Court arguments in the birthright citizenship case

The Supreme Court is hearing arguments Thursday in its first case stemming from the blitz of actions that have marked the start of President Donald Trump’s second term. Before the court are the Trump administration’s emergency appeals of lower court orders putting nationwide holds on the Republican president’s push to deny citizenship to children born to people who are in the United States illegally. Birthright citizenship is among several issues, many related to immigration, that the administration has asked the court […]

Trump administration asks Supreme Court to let DOGE access Social Security systems

The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Friday to clear the way for Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to access Social Security systems containing personal data on millions of Americans. The emergency appeal is the first in a string of applications to the high court involving DOGE’s swift-moving work across the federal government. It comes after a judge in Maryland restricted the team’s access to Social Security under federal privacy laws. The agency holds personal records on nearly everyone […]

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson condemns Trump’s attacks on judges

In a rare rebuke on Thursday, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson pointedly condemned incessant attacks on federal judges. While she didn’t explicitly name the attackers, a range of attacks have come from President Donald Trump and Republican allies in recent months and over the past year. “The attacks are not random. They seem designed to intimidate those of us who serve in this critical capacity,” Jackson said at a conference for judges in Puerto Rico, Politico reports. “The […]

Battle over Black voter representation in Louisiana heads to Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Monday heard oral arguments in a case that could determine whether Louisiana will have to uphold a second majority-Black congressional district. The case more broadly will focus on the future enforcement of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as it relates to how race is legally considered in the drawing of district lines around the state and beyond. The consolidated cases, Louisiana v. Callais and Robinson v. Callais, are focused on a map first crafted by […]

Supreme Court upholds law banning TikTok if it’s not sold by its Chinese parent company

The Supreme Court on Friday unanimously upheld the federal law banning TikTok beginning Sunday unless it’s sold by its China-based parent company, holding that the risk to national security posed by its ties to China overcomes concerns about limiting speech by the app or its 170 million users in the United States. A sale does not appear imminent and, although experts have said the app will not disappear from existing users’ phones once the law takes effect on Jan. 19, new users won’t be […]
