Stephen A. Smith’s non-apology for his comments on ‘Hannity’ about Trump and Black people did not help

Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. Read more opinions on theGrio. Stephen A. Smith’s non-apology was insulting. Many in the community were deeply angry with him for what he said on “Hannity” last week. In his apology, he said he heard us, but he was defensive, aggressive and gaslighting. He said he had been misconstrued and taken out of context. How, Sway? How? He went on “Hannity” and we heard every word. The […]

Georgia activist seek to recruit people who seldom vote

ATLANTA (AP) — Davante Jennings cast his first ballot for Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential race. Republican Donald Trump’s election that year, he says, turned him from an idealistic college student to a jaded cynic overnight. Jennings walked away from a system he thought ignored people like himself, a young Black man who grew up politically conscious in Alabama but wielded no obvious power. It took nearly six years for him to see that view as self-defeating. Now, […]

The Biden-Harris campaign is hitting back at presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump’s camp after the Republican National Committee confused two senior Black male Biden staffers. In a post on X, the RNC, an arm of the Trump presidential campaign, posted a video clip of the Biden-Harris campaign’s communications director, Michael Tyler, saying that the U.S. economy performed better under President Joe Biden than under Trump, his predecessor and 2024 election opponent. However, RNC’s research division credits the assessment to Quentin […]

Marjorie Taylor Greene’s co-opting of #SayHerName is egregious, but white people do this all the time

Editor’s note: The following article is an op-ed, and the views expressed are the author’s own. Read more opinions on theGrio. They want our rhythm, but not our blues.  I say that a lot in my writing because a lot of my writing highlights the many ways in which (some) white people trip over themselves to co-opt and flat-out steal ideas, phrases, content, dances, music, and anything else Black people have. It is a founding principle of this country; it […]

NYPD officers will have to record race of people they question under new police transparency law

New York City police officers will be required to record the apparent race, gender and ages of most people they stop for questioning under a law passed Tuesday by the City Council, which overrode a veto by Mayor Eric Adams. The issue was thrust into the national spotlight in recent days when NYPD officers pulled over a Black council member without giving him a reason. The law gives police reform advocates a major win in requiring the nation’s largest police […]

California reparations proposals don’t include widespread payments to descendants of enslaved people

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California’s Legislative Black Caucus released a slate of reparations bills to implement ideas from the state’s landmark task force on the issue. The proposals include potential compensation for property seized from Black owners, but do not call for widespread direct cash payments to descendants of enslaved Black people. If approved, the proposals would expand access to career technical education, fund community-driven solutions to violence and eliminate occupational licensing fees for people with criminal records. Another proposal […]
