Los Angeles County officials approve emergency declaration over immigration raids

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County officials voted Tuesday to declare a state of emergency that gives them power to provide assistance for residents they say have suffered financially from ongoing federal immigration raids. The move allows the LA County Board of Supervisors to provide rent relief for tenants who have fallen behind as a result of the crackdown on immigrants. The immigration raids that ramped up over the summer have spread fear in immigrant communities, prompting many to limit their […]

Federal judge orders Alabama’s largest county to redraw racially gerrymandered districts

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered Alabama’s largest county to redraw county commission lines after ruling that the districts were unconstitutional because of racial gerrymandering. U.S. District Judge Madeline H. Haikala ruled the county map was unconstitutional because race was the predominant factor when the Jefferson County Commission drew districts. The ruling came in a 2023 lawsuit that says the plan overly packed Black voters, who make up 40% of the county population, into just two districts. “Because the 2021 […]

Georgia’s Fulton County fined $10,000 a day for not appointing Republican election board nominees

The government of Georgia’s most populous county must pay $10,000 a day until it appoints two Republican nominees to its election board under a judge’s ruling issued Wednesday. Though Georgia’s state constitution allows citizens to force special elections on some decisions by county governments, it doesn’t give them the power to overturn county zoning decisions, wrote Ken Jarrard, an attorney […]

ATLANTA (AP) — Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis must step aside from the Georgia election interference case against Donald Trump or remove the special prosecutor with whom she had a romantic relationship before the case can proceed, the judge overseeing it ruled Friday. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee said he did not conclude that Willis’ relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade amounted to a conflict of interest. However, he said, it created an “appearance of impropriety” that infected the […]

An old ‘IT outage’ alert confuses voters in Ga. county with largest number of Black voters, raises questions about ‘cheating’

Warnings of an “unexpected IT outage” Tuesday on the election website of Georgia’s most populous county prompted alarm on social media about potential problems with the state’s presidential primary, concerns election officials quickly dispelled. A red banner atop county webpages warning of a “System Outage” was actually related to a January cyberattack that temporarily crippled government services in Fulton County, which includes Atlanta. It did not indicate any problems with Tuesday’s voting, officials said. “Today has gone relatively uneventful, smooth,” Secretary of […]
