Next week, the U.S. Supreme Court will take up a case that will determine whether to criminalize unhoused people for sleeping on the street.   TheGrio caught up with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., following his weekly press conference on Friday. South Carolina to use unconstitutional map as appeal case lingers

A federal court ruled on Thursday that South Carolina can use a congressional map, which it previously deemed unconstitutional due to harmful impact on Black voters, given that the primary election is nearing and the U.S. Supreme Court has been slow to act on an appeal of the case. The three-judge panel ruled to keep South Carolina’s congressional map in place despite previously ruling the map violates Black voters’ constitutional rights. The state’s primary elections are June 11 with early […]

Fani Willis stays, Nathan Wade resigns from Trump election case

ATLANTA (AP) — A special prosecutor who had a romantic relationship with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis formally withdrew Friday from the Georgia election interference case against Donald Trump after a judge ruled he had to leave or Willis couldn’t continue to pursue the charges. Attorney Nathan Wade’s resignation allows Willis to remain on the most sprawling of four criminal cases against the presumptive Republican nominee in the 2024 presidential election. But the long-term damage to the public perception of the prosecution remains unclear, particularly […]

Fulton County DA Fani Willis can stay on Trump case only if she removes her ex as a special prosecutor, judge says

ATLANTA (AP) — Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis must step aside from the Georgia election interference case against Donald Trump or remove the special prosecutor with whom she had a romantic relationship before the case can proceed, the judge overseeing it ruled Friday. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee said he did not conclude that Willis’ relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade amounted to a conflict of interest. Supreme Court ruling to keep Trump on 2024 ballot goes ‘well beyond’ 14th Amendment case

Former President Donald Trump will remain on all 2024 presidential primary ballots following the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling. Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross told theGrio that this decision “was expected” and that the court did the right thing. “If the court ruled any other way, what would have happened is patchwork,” she explained. “States would have decided maybe they would include Trump on the ballot, maybe they wouldn’t.” On the other hand, she added that states would have had the authority […]

U.S. Supreme Court justices could rule in favor of Trump in Colorado presidential primary ballot case

The conservative-majority U.S. Supreme Court may rule to keep former President Donald Trump’s name on the Colorado 2024 presidential primary ballot. Rep. Steven Horsford, D-Nev., told theGrio that he is not “surprised that the Supreme Court would support the former president’s position and not remove him from the ballot.” At the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., justices heard arguments this week on Colorado’s decision to remove former President Donald Trump from this year’s presidential primary ballot. A Supreme Court case could mean jail time for Black and brown unhoused populations

The U.S. Supreme Court will soon determine whether cities are permitted to criminally punish members of the unhoused community for setting up camp on public property. The majority-conservative court granted certiorari to hear oral arguments in the case of Grants Pass v. Johnson. The justices will decide whether cities are engaging in “cruel and unusual punishment” and subsequently violating the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution by regulating where unhoused people sleep. Donald Whitehead, executive director for the National Coalition […]
