Police reforms enacted after Tyre Nichols’ death will end if Tenn. governor signs bill

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Legislation designed to undo police traffic stop reforms set in place after the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols by officers last year is now headed to Republican Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee’s desk, despite emotional pleas to abandon the measure from Nichols’ family and accusations that the proposal is “extreme government overreach.” For weeks, the Republican-controlled Tennessee Statehouse has remained steadfast in overturning an ordinance adopted by the Memphis city council, which included outlawing so-called pretextual traffic […]

Hate crime bill stalled for almost a year in South Carolina Senate

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Supporters who want to make South Carolina the next-to-last U.S. state to pass a hate crimes law, increasing penalties for some crimes fueled by race, gender or sexual orientation, are running out of time to get what could be a decisive vote in the state Senate. They brought survivors of a racist massacre that killed nine Black worshipers in a Charleston church in 2015 to speak to senators. They have had more than 100 businesses tell lawmakers that South Carolina […]

Amy Fischer, advocacy director for the Americas with Amnesty International, told theGrio that she is happy that “the cruel policies included in the deal are not moving forward.”   “I think it is disappointing […]

A new bill allows a lawsuit for calling someone racist

It seems as though an outlandish headline comes out of the Sunshine State every other day. Now, a new bill in the Florida Senate would allow someone to be able to file litigation in which the terms state “an allegation that the plaintiff has discriminated against another person or group because of their race, sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity constitutes defamation per se.” This violation of the First Amendment — in which the defendant faces fines at least $35,000 […]

New York gov vetoes bill making challenging convictions easier

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York Gov. Kathy Hochul vetoed a bill days before Christmas that would have made it easier for people who have pleaded guilty to crimes to challenge their convictions, a measure that was favored by criminal justice reformers but fiercely opposed by prosecutors. The Democrat said the bill’s “sweeping expansion of eligibility for post-conviction relief” would “up-end the judicial system and create an unjustifiable risk of flooding the courts with frivolous claims,” in a veto letter released Saturday. […]
